Records of Marriage
Marriage records are a tool. They provide plenty of information that can be used. This is especially true if you're getting into genealogy. You might not realize just how much information can be gleaned for this purpose from marriage records. The bride's maiden name is one such useful piece of information that can lead you in a whole new research direction. After all, doing research about genealogy might be interesting for you, even though it can take a lot of your time.
But genealogy research isn't the only value of marriage records. You can obtain such records about a give person simply for the sake of discovering interesting information about that person and his or her spouse.
Marriage Records Are Valuable to Some
You can start filling up a family tree diagram quickly with good marriage records. But you must start by locating the appropriate marriage records. You may be surprised how much information you can put together about a bride and groom when you do so. You will find out what their real, complete names are and how old they were when they applied for a marriage license. You will also discover facts such as where they were living and what jobs they currently held. Information about each of their parents may also be present, such as current addresses. So for those interested in genealogy such marriage records could prove valuable.
Locating Marriage Records
It seems that marriage record locations can vary as much as marriage locations. A formal marriage license must have been issued somewhere. Sometimes, however, this information may be in a location as remote as the location of the wedding. Churches sometimes have these records.
You have plenty of resources at your disposal for obtaining marriage records. Newspapers, for example, often contain the marriage announcements, complete with location. This may be helpful in directing you further. You may discover that you need to look through church directories at a specific locale. Courthouses may also hold clues. But, before you even try searching one of these locations you will need to have some idea of the date of the original wedding.
Online Tools for Marriage records
Sometimes it gets much more difficult because you don't know the information you need for further research, such as the aforementioned wedding date. You may only know a very general idea of the region in which the couple was married. Fortunately, there are now some online tools for marriage records to simplify your search.
If you know as little as this general location and the names of the couple, you can go a long ways with local records searches. County clerks and county courts are often a good place. You may even have to take your search to such a general information resource as state records searches.
You can save yourself a lot of hassle by taking advantage of some of the research services websites now available. They may provide you with paid custom search services or simply with meta public records searches. You'll save a lot of time by being able to do much of this research without traveling the countryside.
As more and more public records become accessible online, the process of searching marriage records becomes easier. If you're looking for marriage records, take some time to look through these resources.
